These babies stick to the rock better than any other approach shoe I have worn. They are very lightweight and seem durable, but time will tell. For me they are a little tight in the toe box, but will probably have some give over time.

These have been my favorite all-around outdoor shoes for just over one year. Be forewarned! They will disarm you at first because of their virtual weightlessness. The feel is somewhat like walking barefoot but with outrageous traction. They grip on rock like crazy. These are not climbing shoes - the sole is relatively rigid and is best for hiking or scrambling. They are ideal on slickrock.

I used this shoe on the Futaleufu River in Chile as a river shoe, a canyoneering shoe, as a hiking shoe and as trail running shoe-I am very impressed by its traction and comfort.

Beware: these run wide

These are my observations so your results might vary.

I was very interested to try these out because I read some very positive reviews on other sites and have been a Five Ten fan for a while.

My first reaction was that they felt pretty comfortable just walking around the house. Although they seemed quite ‘loose’ (low volume feet people beware), I thought I could make them work if I tightened down the laces. However, on the trail, my toes were constantly being jammed on downhill runs, no matter how tightly I laced the shoes up. Also, because of the loose fit my ankles were not properly stabilized and suffered a few minor twists. Not good.

In addition, there is very little protection against sharp rocks underfoot and the cushioning is definitely on the stiff side. I prefer shoes that do a better job of smoothing out the hits.

On the plus side the traction is fantastic.

I know everything is made there these days but it’s still disappointing to see ‘Made in China’ on the shoes of a small US specialty manufacturer.

Anyway, I digress; overall these shoes just did not work for me.

Btw, Mountain Gear is highly recommended – great bunch of folks.
