Product Details
Description:
Built from a rugged yet soft nylon fabric with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish, Mountain Hardwear's Matterhorn pant puts up with miles of abuse while keeping your legs in comfort. A flat integrated adjustable belt doesn't interfere with a heavy pack, inner reinforcements at the seat and knees scoff at abrasive surfaces, a gusseted inseam prevents blown seams, and the zip-off legs (with zippered lower-leg side seams) converts easily to shorts.

Features:

  • UPF rating of 50 protects skin from harsh UV rays
  • Attack melting glaciers or snow - the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish helps water bead up and roll off
  • Cinch into the perfect fit without chafing your waist - the inner micro-chamois lined waist with belt loops treats your skin well
  • Reinforced seat and knees and draw-string closure at the ankle ensure worry-free durability through the backcountry
  • Should it start to warm up, quickly convert to shorts with the zip-off the pant legs
  • Gusseted inseam eliminates uncomfortable and bulky seams through the crotch and ensures ease of movement
  • Store important items, such as your trail map and compass, in the 2 front hand pockets and 2 rear flap pockets
  • Semi-fitted for multi-day comfort

Specifications:

  • Fabric: nylon
  • Liner fabric: polyester
  • Inseam: 32 inches
  • Converted inseam: 11 inches

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's:

I purchased these to replace another major brand name convertable pant that has been worn out. These pants are well designed but could use some improvements. These pants are very comfortable. The lined waist doesn't rub or chafe when under a pack waist belt. The pants move well and fit well without providing excess bulk. The fabric is rather tough and will stand up to most abuse. However, if you plan on doing heavy bushwacking you may want to invest in a heavier fabric. The pockets are deep enough to keep items from falling out when moving and the built in key clip is a welcome addition. My one gripe is the lack of cargo pockets. The hoizontal leg pockets are too tight to put much in and then the items really rub against your legs so small items only in those. A larger vertical cargo style pocket would be appreciated. In summary these pants are great for many outdoor activities provided you don't utilize your pants for much storage.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's:

I work in an industry that requires me to spend the majority of my work week fighting my way, off trail, through the forests of the pacific northwest. I needed a pant that would dry quick, be comfortable when wet, be as durable as possible and have some useful pockets. These pants delivered on all fronts.

The fabric is soft and comfortable but is as tough as my all cotton Carharts. The pockets are well thought out and placed in convenient, easy to access places. I especially like the articulated legs - I can wear gaiters and not feel like I'm constantly pulling at the fabric. The chamois lined waist is fantastic, I don't know why more companies don't try and copy this. The zippers on the legs are long enough to get a real boot out of while the pants are on which is very nice.

I generally despise convertible pants because the shorts are always ugly or look stupid - I almost didn't buy these because I wanted something that was just a pant. As it turns out the shorts on these pants look and fit great. I frequently find myself wearing them on the weekends and off days.

Overall, these are fantastic highly durable, professional grade pants. If you are looking form something that is ultra-light and breathes super-fast, go elsewhere. If you are looking for something that will hold up to rigorous use, tough conditions, and keep you looking pretty good while doing it - these are the pants for you.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's:

Bought these pants about 2 months ago and wore them almost daily for 3 weeks in the northern Cascades. They held up extremely well against abrasion from rock walls and dried fast after soaking rains/sleet. The pockets are well designed for keeping small items secure. These pants are definitely at the top of my list for future travel and I plan to buy another pair. My only negative observation is that the back of the waist band sometimes tended to try to curl down a bit.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's:

I like the material. It seems to be tough yet light weight and dries quickly. Not quite as lightweight as the Mesa pant, but not what I would call too heavy for backpacking.

I have two gripes with the pants and both of them have to do with the waist: The waist in the medium pants are too big for me. A medium Mountain Hardwear Mesa pant fits me perfect. Medium Matterhorn pants are about 1.5" too big.
I also do not like the waistband itself. It looks like the soft waistband liner would be very comfortable. But I cannot keep the waistband from "rolling" down, especially when wearing a pack. It gets to the point where it is uncomfortable.

I really wanted to like these pants, and I do except for the waistband and sizing. Very nice material, zipper on the lower leg for easy entry/exit with shoes on, longer shorts than most, and zippered pocket. Perhaps it's just my body shape, but I cannot get past the uncomfortable waistband. Maybe it won't roll down on you...

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's:

Excellent quality. Love the lining around the waist for wicking moisture. Unfortunately, it is available in 32" length and I am 30". However, with boots, it'll do. It is slightly snug in the front pockets but love the zippered sides.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's:

I have many pairs of "zip-off" pants. These are by far the best. I live in FL and ID. Fishing and paddling in FL and hiking and climbing in ID... these pants fit the bill. They are comfortable, breathable, fit well, the construction is as expected from MH. Zipping off the shorts are not too long or too short. The cuff zip is great at cooling or making it easy to get the zipped off portion off or on over boots.
These were my pants of choice for climbing the Exum Ridge on the Grand Teton. Double seat and knees were welcome additions. Bought 2 more pair immediately upon returning from that climb.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's:

This is my 3rd pair of these Mountain Hardwear convertible pants. Pair #2 hasn't worn out yet, but I want to make sure I have a standby pair. They're the perfect backpacking pants. The waist fits smoothly under your pack's hipbelt (no ugly welts or even wrinkles), the zippers work smoothly and dependably, the fabric is heavy enough to repel moderate brush but not too heavy, and there are plenty of good pockets. Call me 100% satisfied.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's:

These pants are built well but the sizing for functionality needs some dialing in. I was a wholesale buyer for an outdoor shop for 15 years and have been through my share of goods. These pants are cut too small in the waist and seat and legs. Great construction and Hardwear tough but need to be re-sized for the real world. Size up if you want freedom of movement.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's:

I was a little disappointed in this product for the money and am in the process of returning them. I am 5'8" and about 190. The pants were extremely tight around the thighs and upper leg, but loose, baggy and way to long at the bottom. Maybe, i didn't order the right size, but I imagine I would have a hard time finding the right proportion for my size. Also, the material was not quite what I was expecting and felt a little heavy. I am not saying that this isn't a good product though, as it may just be a personal preference.
