Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Parka - Men's:

You need this jacket when you are up before dawn in winter to cook breakfast ! This jacket is full of pockets , has a warm hood , a long length and keeps you very warm . You put on your clothes for your day on the mountain and then put your Sub Zero Parka on over them , this will keep you warm enough while you cook breakfast and get ready for your pre-dawn departure . Remove the parka as soon as you are warm enough on the trail !
Great piece of kit for winter !

This Parka is just what it say it is. I work outdoors evaluating survival schools, both on the move and in training scenerios this parka keeps me warm. The included stuff sack compresses it enough to fit in my pack when not needed. Very light and is ideal when the weather gets miserable. Also great when skiing in not so great conditions.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Parka - Men's:

Two days after my parka arrived the temp. dropped to -25f at night and the following day never reached 0. The cold was no problem for this parka. I wore a T and light sweater under it and was pleasantly impressed (yes, I took backup clothing but never broke it out). I am 6'8" and 200 lbs. I ordered the x-large like one of the other reviewers because it is my norm, but I think the large would have sufficed. I'll keep this one because there is plenty of room for layering and no draft problem when lightly dressed due to the draw cords.. The hood is very roomy with space for a helmet with a lamp. The write up failed to mention the the zipper is two-way which makes this parka idea for belaying. Even at freezing temps Adirondack ice still drips and the hood and outer shell take care of it. Sweat was no problem as it breaths as advertized. I work at a ski center and may wear it to work if it gets too cold for my usual gear. I can't attest to the durability yet, but we'll see. This is a VERY warm garment and I think it will be put away in spring, but for now I am happy as can be. Bravo!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Parka - Men's:

warm jacket! sat comfortably wearing this coat with nothing else under it except for a single thin long sleeve shirt underneath in temperatures hovering between 15-20 degrees. i didn't need anything else underneath.

jacket was bigger then i expected. i'm 6'2" and 235 lbs. i was able to try on the Sub Zero jacket and found it to be too short in length. it barely cleared my waist, so i thought the parka would be perfect. let me say, the parka gives some serious coverage, as it actually droped down about 2 inches below my butt. most of my clothes are usually an X-large or XX-large, but i shoulda ordered a Large instead. it would be safe to say that ordering one size down from what you're used to is a safe bet. i wont complain cuz now i have lots and lots of room to layer!!!

other then that... great jacket.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Parka - Men's:

This is a very nice parka. I have a 42" chest and ordered the large size based on other's reviews. The parka is still roomy inside, leaving more than enough space while wearing a sweater or sweatshirt.

I bought the “sapphire” color because I didn’t want just a basic black jacket. The color is a darker blue than what appears in the online photo, more of a midnight blue. I am happy with the color and glad that I went with this instead of black.

The outside pockets are fleece lined, large, and toasty warm. There are also 2 zippered chest pockets on the outside. The inside pocket is on the left while wearing the parka and is quite large. There is also a mesh pocket on the right for a water bottle that is about 6” wide by 8” tall.

I haven’t experienced wearing this jacket in the rain, but I can definitely say it is wind resistant. Chicago is getting hit with 30 degree weather and high winds. The parka is keeping me very warm in this weather, and I expect it to withstand the sub-zero temperatures coming soon. I am curious to see how it handles rain/snow and how quickly it will dry after being exposed.

I immediately took off the hood that came with the parka, as I don’t like the look or feel of a hood on my jackets. It came off easily with 4 snaps, not a zipper. I can see where this would be a problem for those who want total protection from a hooded parka. I would think the wind and elements will easily find their way through. Like I said this isn’t a problem for me as I took my hood off, but other buyers should be aware before purchasing.

My last comment is about static. I haven’t owned a jacket/parka made out of this material before, so maybe this just goes with the territory. In the dry months I can see that static electricity is going to be an issue. It’s early November here and I’m already shocking myself after taking the parka off. January should be loads of fun.

I would give this a 4.5 but there isn’t a scale for that on the ratings, so I gave it a 4. The parka is excellent in every way except the hood and static I mentioned above. I would recommend this to a friend and would buy another Mountain Gear jacket/parka.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Parka - Men's:

At first, I was not used to the larger down jackets. I am about 6'2" with a 41.5" chest. When I first put on the parka (Size: Large) I was worried that it was a little too big and almost sent it back to get the medium. I decided to give it a couple of days and I am glad I did. Eventually, I put a bottle of water inside the jacket in the mesh pocket, built for that purpose, and found that the jacket fit perfectly. I like the parka because it can go over my rear, provide maximum warmth, and keep wind out more efficiently. A friend of mine told me to get the black parka because it would appear cleaner than any other color.

Since then, I have worn it in five degree weather with just a light, long-sleeve T-shirt. I like the ability to unzip the bottom zipper in order to stay warm while belaying. The hood fits over my helmet. The fleece lined pockets are amazing and all of the other pockets are huge. Buy it and love life.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Parka - Men's:

Very cozy, warm parka. Wore it casually walking around NYC on the coldest day in years, with no need for a sweater. Would be nice if it had armpit zips for when the heat builds up. Also could use fleece or lining on inside of neck area. Coat does get staticky, so expect shocks and the reinforced areas seems to electrically attract dust. Zipper can take a few tries to insert and zip up, but often does on this kind of coat. Overall, though, excellent when it's really cold out there.
