I have only climbed indoors, but using a grigi made belaying so much easier. The rope goes thru so much smoother, saving my arm muscles for my climbs.

the main bad thing is that from what i have seen and heard, as well as noticing myself doing it is, you pay less attention. my example is that if you are belaying somebody really light. ( she weighed about 85 pounds) the cam sometimes doesnt kick in a t she slid about 10 feet down because i wasnt paying enogh attention to the rope. and when she got to the top, i literly had to feed the rope into my grigri. so there should be a minium weight to use this, but this is the only defect i have found and i use it more then my atc.

Overall, this is a great product, however, I believe that it should be redesigned slightly so that the person attached to the device must push the cam UP instead of down to release friction. With the design as it is, I have seen people pull the cam down and then panic when their speed became too rapid. Their next reaction was to pull down fully. This caused an unexpected fall to the safety mat below. I believe that it was instinctive to pull down on the cam when panicking. If the cam lever worked in the opposite direction, I believe that panic would cause the person to lock up the device instead of causing a freefall.

A simplified version of a device used by the NYC Fire Dept. for quick escape from a dangerous area. I use the Grigri for training and familiarization since the FD version must be kept intact for use in an emergency only. This device can be a real life saver when used appropriately.

Great piece of equipment. It was not the easiest thing to figure out for the first five minutes of use; the engraved directions are not good references: best ask a pro-shop or test out (on firm ground)... Anyway, other than that, the Grigri is a reliable device that I would not leave home...ever.

I use these devices at summer camp, where we are putting up around 300 kids a day. No problem with setup effenciency or how consistently they work. I highly suggest these devices to anyone doing alot of belaying. Having the cam, "Just in case" is also nice.
