Comments about Smartwool Midweight Zip-T Long Sleeve - Men's:

I have used similar products, by other companies, including Ibex, Surly wool cycling jerseys, and others. The Smartwool plain old baselayer -- they call it longsleeve middweight t-zip -- is the best for fluctuating temps. The Surly has pockets, and the Ibex has more styling (both wear different types of jerseys so this isn't a fair comparison). It seems to let more wind in than my lightweight Ibex (a Zephyr sport zipneck), but also doesn't keep you as hot, once you start to use yourself as an engine, which is fine. For biking since it's black I wear a light colored cycling jersey over it, or a vest or jacket if the temperature permits. I find red and yellow most visible on the road myself. Lately I've been biking to work in the dark at 6am -- by the time i leave work it's warmer and not yet cold enough for a full jacket but not hot. My previous solution was to either take two jackets, one light and one heavy, for coming or going, or else wear a heavier jacket going in, and get cold in short sleeves riding home. Now, I wear the wool and simply have a lightweight windbreaker. This is sufficient down to the low 40s or upper 30's. The zippered neck helps in pulling it on and off as well as too vent when wearing it. I wear it over a sports or cycling jersey, usually short sleeve, and wear a light colored short sleeve jersey over it. If I'm wearing a jacket I skip the outside jersey tho, which is mainly worn for the color -- the place I got the Smartwool at only had dark colors. Mine is black and I look like American Ninja wearing it alone. But take heart -- smartwool makes a red one accordign to their website.

All that stuff about wool being versatile etc etc is completely true -- within reason. I would not wear wool when it's 80 degrees out. But for cool temperatures, in fall or spring, or as a middle layer in winter, it is so helpful. It's abilities in temrs of warmth and some degree of cooling allow you more leeway in terms of range of temperature. You go into a house after a ride wearing a winter cycling jersey made out of synthetics and after a few minutes you feel like you are being cooked. The Smartwool gets warm if you come indoors out of 50, 40, or lower tempseratures, but not too warm so you have to tear it off. This makes it great for riding for transportation in traffic given the stopping or starting or going into stores to do errands. On and off the bike, all day long, it works...

Comments about Smartwool Midweight Zip-T Long Sleeve - Men's:

This piece is great for keeping warm on a cool day and even better when put to technical use. It is super-lightweight and packs a serious warming punch. I wear this alone with a soft shell for cool-weather hikes and rides. It is form-fitting, features a nice deep front zip and even if you sweat you won't smell like a locker room.

Comments about Smartwool Midweight Zip-T Long Sleeve - Men's:

The softness and feel next to the skin is great and the fit is fine. My only complaint is the zip up neck is already stretched out and I've only washed it once. I may have gone with the crew neck had I known.

Comments about Smartwool Midweight Zip-T Long Sleeve - Men's:

I have been using Capilene for years for mountaineering, ice climbing and alpine skiing or ski touring. Smartwools Zip Tee is by far the best mid layer (or depending on weather top layer) product I have ever used. It is as light, but warmer, wicks persperation well, dries out quickly and hold its shape better for a better feel....and seems more durable. The price is higher...but its a natural material (wool versus plastic) and justs feels good!

SmartWool the Smart Choice
By outdoorsmanVerified Buyer from Mill Creek, WA on 2/4/2006
Pros:
Comfortable, keeps you warm even when wet
Best Uses:
Backpacking, Extreme weather conditions

Comments about Smartwool Midweight Zip-T Long Sleeve - Men's:

I have used my mid weight SmartWool on a few winter climbs in the North West and have always stayed warm regardless of how wet it was. One really nice plus was after three days on Mt. Rainier when we returned to the cars the SmartWool did not have that odor most synthetic shirts will acquire.
