I bought these to wear under pants on days when temps would be in the 18 - 28F degree range cross/backcountry skiing on & off trail in New York's Adirondacks. While I've only worn them two dozen times: moisture retention is no problem, they've retained their shape and they met my needs for added warmth in the area covered on those days when a long underwear pant is not necessary.
I very much like: no added bulk at the waist and their thigh length coverage.

I hike.

I have Patagonia Activist Fleece bottoms which do a great job keeping you warm. They take up pack volume when not worn, however, and "seem" to hinder movement at about the knee. I was considering cutting the legs off a pair, above the knee, but they're too expensive for me for an experiment which requires their destruction.

The Power Stretch Boxer Shorts do what I was hoping for. Warmth. No restriction of movement. Reduced pack volume. These also have a nicer "soft and fuzzy" feel.
