Product Details
Description:
Stronger than any straight-laced design, the CAMP Tri Cam Set uses the strength and stability of the triangle to keep you safe on your climb. Functional in both cammed and chocked positions, the Tri Cam offers passive nut and active cam placement options - they can be placed in the extended mode like a standard nut, or flipped over in a camming configuration for parallel cracks.

Features:

  • Use it on alpine routes, they can be placed in a wide range of cracks and won't weigh you down
  • With color-coded Dyneema slings, you'll never grab for the wrong size
  • Unique design functions in either active or passive protection mode

My first go-to pieces
By BCSVerified Buyer from WI. on 7/11/2006
Pros:
inexpensive, Light weight, Simple
Cons:
Can jam in tight cracks
Best Uses:
Outdoor climbing

Comments about CAMP Tri Cam:

I have the Pink thru Purple Tricams and they're the first pieces I try to plug in the cracks. I like the way they work in parallel cracks! I find them easy to get out as well.

who needs cams anyway?
By camrunnerVerified Buyer from dallas, tx on 5/19/2006
Best Uses:
Outdoor climbing

Comments about CAMP Tri Cam:

who needs traditional mechanical cams when you could have a set of these puppies? I have .5 to 3 for bomber passives and just bought a number 7 for pretty much a gag gift (not thinking I would get much use out it), but i absolutely love these things! easy to set, easy to clean, and I'm not terrified to reach a little further when I know I've got one under me.

Just what the crack ordered
By muaddibVerified Reviewer from goleta, ca on 4/27/2006
Pros:
cover all pro options of an SLCD, cover pockets and seams that SLCDs won't, easy to learn how to place, inexpensive, Light weight, Simple
Cons:
must learn how to place, slings a little hard to rack
Best Uses:
Long Trad, Outdoor climbing

Comments about CAMP Tri Cam:

Well suited to take those no-hands-rest placements instead of an SLCD allowing you to keep the SLCDs on hand for when you are really sketching.
Tricams place well and easily, once you get the hang of them (one days climbing is all you'll need to be proficient).

TriCams v SLCD's
By xClimberVerified Buyer from Tucson, AZ on 3/30/2006
Pros:
inexpensive, Lightweight, Narrow Head Profile, Simple
Cons:
Proper Placement Requires Practice
Best Uses:
Irregular Cracks, Outdoor climbing, Pockets, Shallow Grooves

Comments about CAMP Tri Cam:

The TriCam rules in SE Arizona granite. The cracks here are often shallow, rounded grooves, which are highly irregular inside, rendering sound SLCD placements difficult to make and judge. This is precisely the territory that TriCams excell in. Many folks here prefer Aliens for their narrow head profiles, but the TriCam is actually slightly narrower in the comparable sizes. Aside from the width of the sling they rack nicely, and don't tangle with other gear like SLCD's tend to do.

One caveat: Be aware that the strength ratings are different in the different placement options. The "cammed" orientation is markedly stronger than the "stopper" placement position. That said, security of a placement (will it stay where you put it?) is usually more important than the strenghth of an individual piece.
