I love hiking with a light shoe, but after a week of backpacking in a shoe and a couple of climbs with mucho talus, needed something like the stratos. Light enough, but very sturdy. I needed a 9 where my two other montrails were 8.5.

have many pairs of hiking shoes of various styles & brands, but when i'm facing a tough day of hiking i always grab the stratos. nothing fits better. never had a blister with these shoes. snug fit but ample toe room. wide sole feels very stable on trail. new gryptonite sole gives fine traction on wet rock (big improvement over the original stratos). shoe/boot is sturdy enough for extended hikes with medium/lite pack but also very lightweight. doesn't drag you down--i always feel very energetic wearing these. and the gore-tex makes this boot my all time favorite.

I've bought one per year since this model won Backpacker Editor's Choice three years ago. The earliest model, named the Excellerace, invented the platform - build up for hiking from a trail running heritage. The second model named the Stratos XCR, perfected the upper and lacing. It introduced Gore-Tex EXO which improves water vapor transfer by laminating the Gore-Tex to the outer layer of the upper material instead of the liner like all other Gore-Tex footwear. I just recieved the current (2006) version with Gryptonite rubber and the traction is incredible! This shoe/boot is my favorite high mileage footwear when I need more than a trail running shoe. The Stratos XCR replaces leather hiking boots of old with better fit and under foot cusion, at about half the weight. Dear Montrail - don't change it anymore, it is perfect!
