I got these shoes for long approaches, to glacier ice climbing, to easy mountain rock climbing. That is an average day of sierra peak north face climbing, but it is a lot to ask from any boot. The Montrail D-7 is a stiff approach shoe. The Sportiva trango S is a lightweight semi-flexible mountain boot. This shoe is about half way in between. Surprisingly the D-7 sole feels stiffer and the D-7 is great for low 5th class rock. The advantage of the Vetta over the D-7 is the semi-automatic crampon compatibility and ankle support. This is the deal breaker for me ? the crampon heal lever goes above the cuff and presses on my Achilles tendon. I was using the alpini-geko and BD sabertooth. The smaller Grivel heal lever or CM no heal lever may work. I didn?t try. Don?t expect to front point without rigid crampons; the boot sole is soft forward of the middle.

Overall I liked the boot. It is excellent on rock, with a nice feel for a mountaineering boot and it sticks well. Very light with a nice flex so it works great on the trail. The only flaw I found is that there is just a nylon holding the tongue in place so water gets in on wet snow and even small puddles.

Very impressive product. Great arch & ankle support with a very tractive sole.
If only my dress shoes were this comfortable!
