I was do to go on a snow hike up through Ice House Canyon to Timber Mountain and did not have a proper boot for the job. I got these at the last minute based solely on brand name and price. I literally took them out of the box and started hiking with them. (Not a recommended practice.) But the boots worked like a champ and tromped through the snow like they were born to it. My feet stayed dry and warm through the whole trip. I did develop a bit of a hot spot on the top of my right foot, but I tend to have that problem with all boots.
I bought these boots because they have my last name in them "Kats" but also because my old boots, while they've lasted 8 years and are still fine, are not warm enough for the cold Upper Penninsula winters. Once I put the Chilkats boots on, I could tell they'd be warm. They offer high ankle support and have gator clips if you desire to use gators for deeper water.
In the snow, I am able to tramp through ankle deep snow without getting any snow down the boots. The boot snugs tightly to my ankle and works well with snow pants. Even in the -35 degree windchill that we had the in February, the boots kept my feet warm even though I had cotton socks on. I have tried the boots with wool socks, but since there is a thick insulation in the boot, there is no need for more from wool socks.
I dont forsee me using these in the summer since they are so warm, but for any winter that you encounter, they will stand up to the challenge.
