I do a lot of trail running, orienteering and adventure races and this shoe fits well, breathes well and keeps my feet dry!
Haven't yet truly tested them, but the limited testing I've done makes me really want to fully test.
My only complaint is the extra soft sole. I like the traction, but would trade some for increased wear. Also, don't take the shoe off at the heal; nearly ripped the sole off.
This is the "old" model and my third pair since 2000. I had gone through a pair of Vasque Velocity XCR's for a couple of years and they were okay but I missed the Hurricanes and was not about to get the new style. [...]Normally Montrail runs a half size small for me and I wanted a 13 but ended up with a 12.5 and okay with thinner socks. The Montrails have always seeed more narrow than the Vasques.
small opening and tight tongue makes it harder than most shoes to get into, but once in the shoe feels very comfortable
I have been wearing this shoe for 4-5 years now and I go through 2/yr. I love this shoe. It has held up to hiking/everyday use/construction/spelunking. It is worth every penny. The traction is the best that I have found.
This is my second pair of these shoes, which I bought because I liked the first pair so much. I use them for hiking and backpacking, rain or shine. The only weakness was that the nylon sides seem to wear out faster than I expected. Also, they seem to run a little small; I normally wear size 10.5, but these fit best in a size 11.
Great to pull a shoe straight out its box and not worry about breaking it in "no blisters" on its first, full blown treking day.
This shoe was a great disappointment. After hearing years of praise for it, I finally decided to buy a pair. On the first hike, 16 miles roundtrip, the stitching along the top of the shoe began coming undone. I also had fitment problems, as the shoe was larger than even other models of Montrail shoe. I must have just gotten a bad batch, because I still have to believe that people wouldn't sing so much praise for this shoe if it wasn't very high quality. Unfortunately, they left a bad taste in my mouth and I will not be shopping Montrail again. It's Vasque for me!
These are a much nicer and more rugged pair of trail shoes than the Merrills I had. They will definitely wear longer and perform better.
[...]:Break-in time was VERY short, and the shoe still fits the same, just a little softer now. I haven't needed to adjust the shoelaces once, and they stayed tied very well. The stretch tongue is awesome. During the downhill, it acts as a soft elastic grip on the instep that keeps my toes from touching the front, and gently pulls my foot back to the heal when I finish the step. They are light and they grip very well. I generally have hot feet, but so far I am comfortable in these, so I'd say they breath well. I'm also rather clumsy with my feet, but I have not stepped on my ankle once with these shoes.I replaced some old Lowa Tempest shoes (which are amazing also) with these to lighten up and add the H2O proof. I carry a 30-35lb pack and these shoes are very stable, though they may wear out quicker as a backpacking shoe vs. a trail runner.I have a slightly wide foot, and my toes move freely in the toebox. This gives me better balance, air circulation and comfort.Only change would be a Kevlar lace like Salomon uses. The new design (2007) fits the same as the earlier versions.
Excellent wet weather trail runner or light and fast hiking/backpacking shoe. The gore tex definitely breathes less than my mesh Hurricane Ridge trail runners, but these keep my feet drier in wet conditions and keep the grit out from between my toes on dry dusty trails.
I have to preface this by saying that I put Superfeet insoles in all my shoes, including these. But other than that, I went running in them the day I got them in the mail. There was no "Break-in" period. They're ready to go! They fit like a glove, if that could apply to your feet. I mean, they're a bit unlike any other shoe. But you'll like them. Lots of Bang for not so much bucks!
Just got these after owning an earlier version and they are even better. Fits just as previous model, but have some nice additions...such as GoreTex XCR. I wore them for the first time on a hike to Angel's Landing in Zion and they were comfortable and performed great on the scrambling. Would recommend these shoes for sureone that wants an all weather trail runner that works well for hiking too.
I have trained and competed in this shoe for several years. I have run primarily 50 to 100 mile trail events in all types of terrain. The right sock and shoe combination can provide flawless blister free running. This shoe is equally effective in wet and on technical rocky terrain. Buy this model now before supplies run out!
I have been wearing these shoes while walking to town through snow, slush, and running water. They have kept my feet warm and dry. I think they will perform just fine on day hikes as soon as the snow pack disappears.
Trudging through the snow on campus is no fun, luckily I sport these babies with their gore-tex xcr completely waterproof membrane.
I have to admit that I haven't had good experiences with montrail climbing shoes, but the hiking boots and trailrunners are bomber options.
These shows seem to run a bit long and narrow. Luckily they stretch a little so the narrowness isn't painful, but if you have wider feet you may want to avoid this show. Buy a half size down and you won't regret this shoe.
