these are great shoes but putting them on is difficult because the tongue is attached to the shoe. You have to unlace them in order to get your foot in. I continue to buy them because the traction is great, the fit is comfortable, they need no breaking in.
Three pairs of these have endured hundreds of miles of wet, muddy, snowy and rocky abuse. They are definitely my favorite running shoe ever. I think the soles have a phenomenal tread pattern that could keep you comfortable on wet rock and alpine kitty litter or anything that requires traction. This is not a lightweight shoe. It is very supportive, and is good for epic runs. I don't mind a little extra weight for that kind of support. This shoe would be overkill for smooth trails/short runs unless you really wanted a lot of support. In particular, I think the heel cup and ankle girdle of this shoe give phenomenal support. Also, the front-to-back flex is stiffer thanyour average running shoe. My foot is narrow to medium, with a normal arch and a normal forefoot. My heel is not particularly narrow. I think the toebox of these shoes is very roomy-- part of what I like-- though the arch section will lace up snugly enough so you don't have slop. This shoe would accomodate a medium volume foot easily-- mine are laced pretty tight with my low-medium volume foot. Instead of an overlapping tongue there is a neoprene-y one-piece sock/gasket thingy that I like. Makes it a little harder to take on and off though. The insides of this shoe are smooth- nice. Mine held up well, especially considering the abrasive rocks that I am often running on and lots of mud. Recommended.
My favorite shoes ever. This is my third pair and I'll keep buying more. Comfortable and water proof.
I love Montrail shoes, and sepcifically the Hurricane Ridge XCR model. The shoe stands up to my wear and tear, is incredibly comfortable, and has great, lasting, tacky tread. I recommend this shoe to any outdoor adventurer or recreationalist. A few friends a bit larger than me have had problems with the shoe wearing holes in the fabric right at the toebox bend, however. It seems the shoes are not made more durable as size increases. But if you're small (<160 lbs), these shoes should be perfect!
I love this shoe for the ability to run between road, snow, and huge puddles. Additionally its a great all weather shoe even if you are not running. If you are planning on trail running with this shoe know that the arch support runs slightly flatter like a nike shoe. I usually wear more of a high arch support shoe like mizuno wave. There is some brake in time with these. They are stiff but they are ment to be.
