Couldn't wait to get my hands on this light, and now I'm thrilled to use it all the time! I have an old school Petzl that I love, but headlamps have just gotten so much brighter, lighter and slimmer that I had to upgrade. Was using a Tikka for my night xc trips, and moving the Lucido is a huge improvement.
High output, simple, durable light. The choice of lighting (high output single LED, flood LED's, or both) is great because the light has separate lights for each instead of simply dimming the main bulb and gives a better spread of light when using the low power flood LED's. Rear blinking red LED's are a great safety feature and can be turned off. I used mine while motorcycling during a roadside stop at night to put on rain gear. I appreciated the extra visibility to other cars from the red rear LED's.
Uses more common AA's that I share with other devices (camera flashes, GPS, ect.)
Rotates into it's mount for storage and protection and prevents accidental turn-on.
The small controls for the light could be difficult to operate with bulky gloves if this is a concern. Could be more substantial in construction, but this may be to keep weight down.
Overall, very pleased and highly recommend this light.
This is my 8th headlight following some BD, Peztl, and some Taiwanese brands. This is the most powerful one. The design is good and very user friendly. Highly recommended!!
I have used many headlamps throughout the years from brands such as Petzl, Black Diamond, Princeton Tec, ect; but this headlamp from Mammut takes the cake.
I have used this headlamp for over a year now zip tied to my bike helmet on a daily basis as my torch for my daily nightly bike commutes and weekend rides that go to dusk and beyond.
I do have to admit that using the three red flashing l.e.d's on the battery pack as a biking light does seem a little dorky sometimes but I rather be seen in the middle of the night than be worried all the time about getting hit by a car in the darker parts of the city. In addition it is always nice not to have to remember to take off fixed lighting from my bike when I lock it up; as I have had a fair share of lights stolen off my bike.
I have also used this headlamp during a recent six day alpine climbing trip in the North Cascades as well as during a few other climbing trips.
During the North Cascade trip the group had to make some rather dicey creek crossings as well as traverse large bolder fields during a pitch black night.
Sometimes following in the back of the group I could illuminate the way for the guide in the front if I wanted to; that's how bright this thing is. Additionally the ability to have the long distance beam on at the same time as the proximity lighting was a godsend. I could sweep down in front of me and a have a broadly lit view of the nearby obstacles then look up and have the concentrated beam light up the path 90 or so meters in front of me.
The beam on this lamp is phenomenal both for its brightness and longevity. In my year of using this headlamp I have yet to replace the batteries due to the lamp actually running out of juice. This is largely because before going on a trip I have always made it a habit of started out with fresh batteries even if the head lamp seemed to be producing strong light.
Even so, I have used this headlamp biking daily for four to five months without it failing on me or having a drastic reduction in the beam's power.
Everywhere I go I get people asking me about this headlamp when they see it in action. If you need one torch for biking, alpine climbing, backpacking, or nearly anything else you can think of (short of scuba diving or canyoneering) then this might be the headlamp for you.
That being said I am sure there are many applications where this headlamp would be a little but of overkill but if I personally had to pick one headlamp for everything, this would be it.
As a minimal critique, the Lucido TX1 is a little awkward with it's rather large battery pack's size and weight but by tossing some lithium batteries into the battery pack there will be significantly reduced weight; helping to make the headlamp wear more comfortably.
Great beam and light levels. I like the ability to turn it into its cover to protect the lens an to prevent accidentally turning it on in a backpack. On the down side it seems lacking quality for the price and questionable weather resistance, with the battery cover being just a slip-fit rubber cover.
