Customers most agreed on the following attributes:
1. It is a GPS device which means it needs clear line of sight to the sky. Tree's, bridges, etc all block line of sight.
2. When you take it with you: you find clear sky and send the ok message.
3. You aren't suppose to get a return code or message acknowledging receipt of the sent message.
There will be times when the 10 minute interval will be missed in the tracking mode due to not having line of sight to the sky (tree's).
However knowing its limitations and using it accordingly will fit nicely into your excursion.
Definetly a life saver !
I have used my SPOT in the Pacific NW and in the Andes in South America, without any problems. I can pre-establish "OKAY" messages and have them sent to ten others who may then see my location on Google maps by clicking the link. I can also pre-establish "help" messages and specify who they are sent to. I've used help messages to identify when I'm at the road head and ready for pick up. The emergency E911 message also includes pre-established information that I write and also initiates real rescue actions whereever I might be. The accuracy of the GPS appears as good as any other GPS unit. While climbing Aconcagua, the SPOT worked perfectly and shows my movement from camp to camp. Everytime I sent an OKAY message it went through. I wish there were better feedback on the unit, then some coded blinking LEDs, but it still worked. To send my OKAY message, I would set it in the open and push the button and leave it there for about 20 minutes. The LEDs light up in a simple pattern to inform as to what it is doing (good gps, bad gps, transmitting to satellite). I really like this device and the price is reasonable.
This is not worth the money. It does not perform well in the woods. You can not tell if a message has been succesfully sent/recieved. Today I hiked of 2 hours on a wooded trail and had the unit in a mesh pocket on the outside of my backpack. It is supposed send a tracking message with location every ten minutes. It did not send one. I went for a road (bike) ride. I had the SPOT zip tied antena up, to my aero bars. It only sent 2 messages in the 70 minutes I was gone.
