i regret buying this watch. it is dim and hard to see the information. i purchased it and left on a trip. sort of stuck with it till i return. it is a bit not what i thought. i miss my g shock
I hike 3 out of 4 weekends in the peak seasons. This watch is great at doing what it is supposed to do. Having read some previous comments I'd like to give my own views. Yes, you shouldn't swim in it. Suunto tells you this at the outset and this isn't a dive watch (Suunto makes great dive watches also). Yes, the face can tend to scratch easily although I've had mine for 2 years and the face is VERY readable. As far as battery life, I'm not sure what the expectatons are, but I replaced my battery for the first time at 15 months. All of this being said, the instrumentation is great. Very reliable so long as you calibrate the watch correctly. This watch is probably the best available for it's functionality. It will take you 30 minutes or so to familiarize yourself with all of the functions. [$]
Great outdoors sports watch, on land or the on water, day of night. Light allows night use for all functions. Turns into a good traveling pal.
I have owned mine for 4 years.I use equipment not abuse it.Has been to a few different places with me,mountains-deserts-praires.New Zealand,USA,Iraq+ more.It has treated me fine to date.As with any tool if you use it,it will get a
few marks and scratches.
I really like this tool, especially for its ability to aid in navigation, however I have decided to return to my former watch after I discovered that the seconds read out would only display for a few seconds. There is an animated "second hand" that counts seconds, but I felt it was difficult to be accurate. I work as a outdoor educator and I need my watch to take vital signs in an emergency situation. I just didn't feel confidant in the "second hand" thing. It was had to retire this watch for this reason, but after a couple of years with an analog watch I really don't miss it. Hope this helps.
I am a SWAT officer and I am rough on watches. The face is way too delicate for the job and don't swim in it. It will mess up the altimiter and baromiter and will not read correctly. The bezel came off while shooting. Backlight is ok. Compass needs to be recalibrated every two weeks. Surprisingly holds time very well and did not adjust for a year. Buy from authorized Suunto rep with valid Warranty only!!!!!!!!!!! Or you will have to pay for repairs!!!!!
I wear it everyday, all day. I'm now on my second Vector but only because the first got too close to an MRI unit after my last backpacking excursion (magnet messed it up!). I had my first for more than 4 years and replaced the battery about 3 times; the last was 2 months ago. The compass does need recalibrating every so often as does the altitude if you travel much, but not a big deal. Tough as nails! Sure it'll scratch but what doesn't?! I swim in the ocean twice weekly in the warm season, (April thru October in Sunny South Carolina!), and haven't had a sand or waterproof problem ever. Order replacement straps and batteries direct from Suunto and you're set.
Great all around tool and the watch (actual TIME) is THE MOST ACCURATE I've ever had!

this watch is huge. I'm returning it.
THis is the second one I bought. The first did not stay water proof, the case cracked and face scratched easily. However it is the best watch with all its options for the money. Be careful of the black face, it is more difficult to read in many conditions. Also, the back light on these watches are poor on either face (normal or black).

BEST WATCH I EVER OWNED, UNTIL IT UP AND DIED AFTER 3 YEARS DURING SOME VERY TAME WATER SPORTS.
IT ANGERS ME THAT THE VECTOR DOES NOT HAVE MORE STAYING POWER, BUT I AM BUYING ANOTHER ONE BECAUSE IT WAS THE BEST CLIMBING WATCH WHILE IT LASTED.
Obviously good feature-wise, I keep coming back to it. But my last Vector only lasted 18 months before moisture got to it in a rainy camping trip and killed it off. The first two lasted somewhat longer, but eventually died the same way.
I've owned this watch for a few years, using it quite a bit in the Tetons and in Idaho mtns, so often to 12000'. Having an altimeter has saved my butt on more than 1 occasion in whiteout conditions on the NW volcanoes. This one is spot-on accurate. Negatives: relatively bulky - therefore I have to put it in my pack when climbing alpine rock (to jam cracks). Also eats up the battery in short order, despite being careful to not leave it in altitude mode (I switch it back to time mode). Seems it needs a new battery every 3-4 months. Perhaps that is just the nature of the beast.
Easy to use. Even has a quick reference card inside the instruction manual. Once you read the manual and study the reference card, you can do everything with this watch. Already put it to the test with hiking in Iraq. Great in cold weather when I visit wife and kid in the United Kingdom.

I purchased this watch for my fiance for Christmas. He adores it! He wore it everywhere for a full week. His main reason for wanting it is that he is an avid adventure racer. He is required to plot courses on a map and navigate his way through tough terrain so the special features like the altimeter really give him an advantage. The Suunto Vector is his new best friend.
