This is a great duffel bag. I have the smaller north face duffel bags (that family members love to borrow) and have loved them. They are durable, easy to transport, and roomy. I ordered the extra large and it is huge! As you're considering travel luggage, these bags make a great set. I used the small bag on a two day trip to Chicago and it gave me plenty of room. The shoulder straps enable you to put it on your back like a backpack and quickly move through the airport. The extra large has room for a week long trip with room left over for souvenirs.

This is a great duffel for slogging a lot of gear around, particularly if there's a good possibility it'll get beaten up. It will hold up to ungentle handling by airports and 3rd world porters. It's not as vast capacity-wise as some of them out there, but it won't come back with holes in it. That's more important, in the scheme of things, and my backpack still fits (even if some of my other stuff doesn't, quite.)

If you head to the mountains, the North Face duffels have to be your first choice. They are airport, chairlift and yak proof! My only problem is the carrying straps could be clip on/off for easier detachment.

I owned 3 older TNF duffles made out of cordura. I bought the newer model about 3 years ago. It quickly became my bag of choice. It was medium size which I find big enough to pack a week of clothes and small enough to carry easy. The backpack straps make it great for carring any distance. It packs easy into the rocket box on the roof of the jeep, in the back of the truck, the cargo area in the plane, and the waterproof pvc material makes it great for the ride in the bottom of the canoe. I carried it for my flight in a small 4 seat aircraft across the north Atlantic above the Artic Circle to Europe and back as well to the beach and mountains for family vacations. I just bought the 2nd one to replace the older cordura bag to take on my flight next week to Yellowstone and onto Alaska for flyfishing. It is bombpoof and you can' wear it out. I plan to buy a 3rd one in the small size next.

Holla' at your hauler
By Bloke TardVerified Purchaser from Craftsbury Common, VT on 3/1/2007
Pros:
Highly Adjustable, Large Capacity, Material
Best Uses:
Travel, Wet Weather
Describe Yourself:
Avid Adventurer, Student, Trecker
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This duffel is one heck of a hauler, I have purchased it for a two month trek into the India Himalaya. The material and design should prove to be water tight. Weather packed up or loaded down this pack proves manageable with the built in shoulder straps and side compression straps that allow you to lug your load keeping it snug to your back. Weather it be across the terminal or across town this pack is out of sight!

Good but quality has declined from past

Pros:
Highly Adjustable, Large Capacity
Best Uses:
Heavy Loads, Travel

Bottom Line:

While the base camp duffel is still a good product, I am disappointed with The North Face in quality shortcuts over the years. I own two older BCD's that are about 8 years old. They have been some of the best equiptment I have ever owned. I bought a new larger duffel to supplement these. The older duffels have much stronger nylon straps, about three times as much padding on the shoulder straps, and just seem overall better built. I guess time will tell.

Awesome Bag
By Digger the AdventurerVerified Purchaser from Sac-Town, Ca on 7/29/2006
Pros:
Bomb-proof, Large Capacity
Best Uses:
Car Camping, Travel

This bag can take a beating! I wish that I had picked-up the extra-large over the large, it would have easily held my already packed backpack. That would have made it easier to check in at airports. The zippers, strapes, etc. are bomber-proof!

Great Bag
By TannerVerified Reviewer from Kansas City, Kansas on 6/22/2006
Pros:
Large Capacity
Best Uses:
Car Camping, Travel

Have two of these already and buying another. They have been through many airports and many trips. On a trip a few months back some wicked storms whipped through arkansas where i happened to be mountain biking/camping. the bags were outside of the tent in hail, drenching rain, mud and 50mph+ winds. the next morning everything inside the bag was perfectly dry. the bags themselves just got cleaned off. get one.
