I live in Arkansas, where it can get pretty cold. These gloves are for moderate temps (20-40) when not active and for 35 and above when active. With a shell on top, you can use into the negatives. Too tight at my wrist though.
I only trust my digits with OR gear.
I live in Eugene, OR and it doesn't get very cold here. I wanted something thin and light for when I ride my bike into work in the morning. I ordered a large, the finger lengths are fine, though I wish it was a snugger fit, particularly around the wrists. They move around a little too much when shifting gears for my liking. However, I doubt this was the intention of the design of the glove. Keeping that in mind, I'm sure they're a great baselayer glove.
There is no substitute for the Outdoor Research PL Base Glove. Even in below-freezing conditions, this glove keeps you warm and comfortable and, when you're going hard, it doesn't "sweat up" and grow wet, heavy and (therefore) useless. I lost one of my OR gloves on Mt. Carrigain this winter -- my bad, as they say -- and it was like losing a member of the family. I recommend these gloves for anyone who's serious about QUALITY hiking gear. My OR gloves have taken me to the summits of over 350 NH peaks in the last four years. You can wear them in any season; just having them in your backpack adds a ton in the way of reassurance, even as they're literally light as down.
