Hike strong through dry snow blowing over a rocky ridge line in the Exos Jacket from Outdoor Research. You'll be able to expel moisture, and move fast and light - when strenuous aerobic activity has steam rising from your head, the stretch-woven fabric keeps your body venting.
  • While you're protected from the wind and water by the double-weave mechanical stretch fabric, you'll also vent, thanks to its superior vapor permeability
  • On steep grinds, wicking polyester inner surface moves perspiration away from your skin while the DWR finish deflects persistent drizzle
  • Dual hem drawcord adjustments maintain a slim profile and keep chilling gusts out
  • You won't be lacking places to put things with the two external zippered pockets, two internal pockets, zippered security pocket, and bag pocket
  • 2006 Closeout
  • Weight: 1 lb 2 oz

Pros:

Lack of water resistance
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

Good jacket for the sale price. It works well as an aerobic piece in cold dry weather. I also like to rock climb in it because it is quite abrasion resistant. The major drawback to this product is the lack of water resistance. Forget about taking this jacket into the rain. Even in a light shower my base layer has gotten wet while riding my bicycle for just a few miles. Properly used this is a good jacket though.

Very slim/form fitting. If you intend to layer this jacket with something thicker than merino or polyester order one size up.

Breathes well. I've been using it for XC skiing on milder days.

Its a softshell. That means it is not meant for stormy conditions, and it is not an insulation piece for frozen belays. But for in-between, breezy fall weather, or non stormy winter days it makes a great shell for when your active. I overheat easily, so I don?t want a warm jacket when Im climbing or skiing. So far I like it!

I'm about 6'2'' and 175 lbs and I got a large. It fits very nicely, though it doesn't leave a lot of room for fleece. It's a little out of season for me so I haven't worn it that much, but thus far it is very comfortable, warm and in a light rain has beaded water (can't say any more about water resistance yet). It doesn't have a fleece lining, but I'm beginning to appreciate that. All and all worth the money!

Great jacket for the great sale price, feels like a good tailored shirt, but might be a little bit snug for mid-weight layering. Lightweight or tshirt underwear would work the best. Great waterproofing.

This jacket is light, packable, and just warm enough for my purposes. I'm glad it doesn't have a fleece lining as I was looking for something lightweight and not too warm. It's not waterproof, and it won't keep you dry in a driving rain, but it does shed water like a duck. It also seems very breathable. The workmanship is excellent, and the fabric seems very durable. It looks great, has just the right amount of pockets, and the fit is perfect. I hesitated for weeks before ordering it, even at 50% off, but I'm extremely satisfied with it.

The Exos Jacket is very form-fitting. I'm 6'0, 185 and actually got the Medium. The fit can accomodate one base layer and a light insulation layer. OR's sizing chart is right on. If you don't like form fitting, I would probably suggest one size larger. I forsee using this jacket on anything from backpacking to paddling to light alpine mountaineering. Great workmanship and fabrics seems tough as coffin nails! Shoulder and or elbow articulation could have been a bit better, but I like the slim, form-fit.

very close to perfect
By Jon the Weekender from SF, CA on 4/16/2006
Pros:
Breathable, Durable, Great DWR
Best Uses:
Boarding, Casual Wear, Hiking and Camping

Pros:
Tough fabric, won't snag on sharp objects like Schoeller fabrics. Sleek cut that still accomodates a few layers. Low cut collar that does the job, stays out of the way, and accomodates layers without being too big. Really breatheable. Killer DWR. Lots of useful pockets inside and out.
Cons:
Wrist openings are the right size, but they'd be better if they were adjustible. Collar is lined with soft poly but the wind flap isn't and can cause a little chin chafing. Elbows could use more articulation.
Verdict:
Not the lightest or highest tech, but covers 75% of my outerwear needs, and does it very well.

Excellent value
By weekend regularVerified Purchaser from Salt Lake City on 1/31/2006
Pros:
Compact, Lightweight, Tough, well made
Best Uses:
backcountry skiing

I've used this jacket for every backcountry day since it arrived. It has been adequate for wind and snow conditions where I previously would have pulled my hard shell out of the pack. It is very compact and under a hard shell makes a comfortable middle layer for moderate temperatures.
