Submission Guidelines

The Mountain Blog celebrates the Mountain Gear community, its people, and their adventures. We will consider guest submissions to the Mountain Blog if they meet certain criteria

  1. The post must be useful to the readers of this blog.
  2. If your post has numerous grammatical errors, is plagiarized, is advertorial in nature, and/or is otherwise substandard, we reserve the right to not publish your work regardless of whether or not we have agreed to publish it.
  3. The post must be grammatically correct and well-written.
  4. The post must not include marketing-related links and must not be entirely self-promotional.
  5. Guest posts must be original and may not have been published elsewhere online already.
  6. While profiles may contain information gleaned from our vendor-partner websites, they must always include new quotes and information. This will enable us to maximize SEO and maintain the integrity of our site.

Guest posts that are approved for publishing will be published without notice. Please check the blog periodically to see if your post has been published. Due to the high volume of guest posts this blog receives, we will not respond to questions about the status of a guest post submission.

Payment guidelines:

To get paid:

  1. You must send an invoice once your final article, photo, or illustration is approved.
  2. You will be paid 4 to 6 weeks after your work is published.
  3. If we don’t use a piece that we specifically commission, we will pay you a 25% kill fee. This scenario is unlikely.
  4. You won’t typically get paid for reviews if you get to keep the item you are reviewing.
  5. If you have never published anything of significance and/or you are a new writer, and/or we don’t actually need the piece you have submitted, but you still want to publish it, you likely won’t get paid for that piece.

First Pitch

  1. Published one to three times per month.
  2. 1000-1200 words
  3. These are full-length stories about your mountain adventures and outdoor experiences. These are stories that come full circle and have a theme, point, or lesson learned. They are also typically about a notable adventure or experience, such as a first ascent or descent, a life-changing experience, a radical change experienced in life, or something like that.
  4. Three to five photos must be provided
  5. $75

  1. Published four to six times per month.
  2. 300-600 words
  3. These are clips: short trip reports, musings about the mountain life, news, quick stories, funny experiences, tips on how to improve a backcountry experience, profile Q&As, or news items, among other things.
  4. This section might also include a series of posts about your adventures that we post in real time (i.e. you write us from where you are adventuring, and we post on the blog and accompanying social media the day you send us the posts). For example, maybe you are going on an expedition somewhere and you are able to send us blog posts and photos from wherever you are via satellite phone. We’d commission a series of articles.
  5. One to two photos must be provided.
  6. $50

You don’t have to be the best climber, skier, or mountaineer to submit these stories, but they are also not simple trip reports. They should come full circle and have a theme, point, or lesson learned.
  4. One to two photos must be provided.
  5. $50
