Comments about SPOT Global Satellite Phone:

I read a lot about this phone prior to making the purchase. I have to say that my real world experience with the SPOT global phone hasn't really stacked up against the "promises" and specs.

First, the phone drops calls even when I am out in the wide open. Recently, I was up on the "Highline" 20 miles outside of Havre, MT with nothing to block me. I stopped the car, pulled out my phone to make a routine call back to the office, and all I got for about 10 minutes was "searching".

Finally, after I was able to get the icon indicating the phone was registered, I placed my call, and after about 30 seconds, I got dead silence. Dropped call. [Hello, hello, hello?].

Those times where I could make a call, it worked well, audio was good, and dialing was simple - but at the end of the day this phone has got to work - and more often than not it doesn't.

I made a big investment on the phone, and the Mountain Gear rep. was really helpful in answering my question, but my suspicion is that I was "oversold" on the product's capabilities and limitations.

It's a hard pill to swallow, now that SPOT has me locked in a 12 month contract with a huge early termination penalty. Frankly, I feel duped by SPOT. The phone does not stack up to all the bold statements about it. I'm going to have to go with something else, after this contract is over.
