The best part about Black Diamond's Ultra Mountain Carbon Trekking Poles are that you won't even notice them until you need them.

Their Z-Pole construction allows them to fold into thirds for easy storage inside or outside the pack and with a simple pull on the handle, they can be deployed to help you keep your balance on rough, uneven terrain. 20 cm of FlickLock Pro adjustability lets you adapt to conditions on the fly.

I have used these poles all winter splitboarding and on a few longer trailruns, they are superduper light, compact and fit inside your pack, no more falling with fear of poking yourself in the head or butt. Mods: I stripped the wrist straps off (super easy to do). Also, I like to bring some duck tape always for, you-just-never-know, so I wrapped some around the shaft that doubles as an extra, lower hold. There's no adjustability on these poles, so if you are looking for a bomber, quadruple adjustable pole with a bunch of options, check out the BD ski-poles. If you want no bs, packability, simplicity and the lightest, stealthiest pole around... this is the one.

Unfortunately, had to return these poles. The push button to retract the grip part of the pole was so stiff and tight that it was almost impossible to operate and would be totally impractical on the trail. They are also heavy & bulky as compared to the Distance FLZ pole.

Glad I took the plunge

Comments about Black Diamond Ultra Mountain Carbon Trekking Poles:

These are great poles! They are lightweight, and very strong! My husband and I each got a set and we have used them several times, hiking in AK. Up steep, rocky mountains, ridge lines, and crossing rivers. The poles have saved our knees, and on several occasions our bums from epic slides down muddy mountainsides. We both love how quickly the poles can deploy and pack up. Looking forward to using them in the snow in the Great Lakes. Great product!

Light and solid

Comments about Black Diamond Ultra Mountain Carbon Trekking Poles:

Great poles. Simple design, easy to break down and very light. Just used them to haul a massive load up Baker and ski down. Icy conditions going up and I was putting some major force on these things. They didn't budge. I do miss the adjustability of the clip poles, but the fact that I can put these things in a pack when I'm done more than makes up for it.

Comments about Black Diamond Ultra Mountain Carbon Trekking Poles:

These are replacing older, heavy, non-collapsible poles. These new poles are light, strong and easy to deploy. Fold up nicely when not in use.

Perfect all purpose poles

Comments about Black Diamond Ultra Mountain Carbon Trekking Poles:

Have wanted an all purpose set of poles that are suitable for travel. Can throw these in a carry on. Terrific for skiing as well as hiking/mountaineering. Have found no fault with these poles.

Great poles for someone who has never had a pair

By Heath

Comments about Black Diamond Ultra Mountain Carbon Trekking Poles:

I have done a lot of hiking, but I have never used trekking poles before I got these, now I can't go back. A pack balances better on your back because you can lean forward into the poles just enough to help stabilize it. They also help tremendously when going up hills. they are so light you don't really even feel them, but they feel very sturdy at the same time. I think the best feature is the carbide tips, those things grip anything and everything and don't chip on concrete or asphalt. In short great poles

Lightweight

Comments about Black Diamond Ultra Mountain Carbon Trekking Poles:

I've used those poles for a couple months now, on snow and rocks. Hike with them for several days over boulder fields and talus last summer, and they worked out great. My only complaint is that if you use your poles for building tarp shelters, you can't adjust them. Mine being the 110cm, they are a little low for my tarp. I can still use them, but I loose head space and view.

Excellent Poles for Many Reasons

By Kenneth

from Spring City, PA, USA

Comments about Black Diamond Ultra Mountain Carbon Trekking Poles:

Recently climbed Mt. Fuji and found these poles were perfect for this climb and trip. They fit well in my suitcase and were relatively small profile on the back of my climbing pack when not in use. The poles extended and retracted easily and perfectly every time in all conditions. They are light but very strong holding my weight easily without a doubt and this was important in many cases where this support was critical. I followed the sizing chart and thought the poles were a bit tall when I received them but remember that your pole plants are typically behind you or before you ...so mostly at an angle ...so don't worry if seemingly too tall when you stand them next to you on hard surface. The rubber tips gripped well on stone or loose ground and wore very well. The poles took a hard pounding on lave rock climbs but never lost their grip on the surface and never felt unstable with my weight on them. Also, they look good too! I will probably use them skiing this winter as well after changing steel tip and snow basket also supplied with these poles. Bottom line - very happy with this purchase and highly recommend.

Great trekking pole, lightweight

Comments about Black Diamond Ultra Mountain Carbon Trekking Poles:

While I've only had these poles on hand for a few weeks now, I can honestly say that I'm pretty satisfied. I've dragged them around the Eastern Sierra on some big alpine approaches, day hikes, and a 3 day 60 mile off-trail backcountry backpacking trip--they're holding up nicely. A couple things to note, however. I'm 6'1 and bought both the 130cm (per the sites recommendation) and the 120cm (based on my personal experience) and ended up going with the shorter pole. Even then, I could probably go shorter. Unless you are walking on flat ground or plan on using them for skiing as well as hiking (there are other, better BD poles for backcountry skiing) then sizing them short is the way to go. Especially for mountain travel. But it's all a matter of personal preference. As far a durability goes, I can see these lasting a fair amount of abuse. They definitely aren't going to last forever, but I figure if I can get three solid years out of them I'll be psyched. Carbon can take a beating but it has a very distinct line in the sand which you don't want to cross but inevitably will eventually. All in all I think they're pretty rad. I dig the Z-Pole design. I never adjust my poles once I get moving, anyways. Easier to just have them ready to go when you need them.
