Silent Partner

Despite the complex issues and increased risk associated with solo climbing, it does offer many rewards.

The Silent Partner is a speed-activated braking device that attaches to a climbing rope with a clove hitch, and to your harness via two locking carabiners. Because the device is sensitive to rope speed, the Silent Partner will lock up to stop a fall regardless of body position. It will also function as a lowering device by simply passing the rope around your hip to provide friction. Although roped solo climbing is not for everyone, for those who take the time to learn how, and accept the inherent risks, it does offer many advantages.

Comments about Rock Exotica Silent Partner:

This is, in my opinion, the most reliable, well-designed solo device on the market. I have used several solo devices and find that this device is great for aid and free climbing. I have owned other solo devices and found that while they may work well, for some reason, i just dont trust them on aid climbs. I know when i fall on my silent partner, it will stop me. This faith in my device has led me to lead my hardest routes with the silent parnter (I think that I have actually led my hardest route with this device). The silent parnter will not fall asleep at the belay or yell beta at you. It is zen-like... sorry. Getting off topic. But honestly, it is a great device. I have taken numerous whippers on it (20+) and it has earned its place as my favorite piece of gear.

Drawbacks- you can not ask your SP to "take" and sit on the rope. When you are about to go for a big move and try to stick it, you cant sit on your rope. You fall until the centrifugal mechanism locks up. This is a benefit in disguise as you will send some of your hardest routes because you really can not sit on the rope and also, dont want to fall. The second drawback is that it takes some getting used to with the backup knots and such and getting the system down. The backup knots sound annoying, but it is a safer and it also helps the device run better. Third drawback is that it is bulky which might be a problem on some thin face climbs because it pushes your body away from the wall.

Side note: Dont buy this product for top-rope soloing. Just buy an ascender and use a chest harness. It is cheaper and easier to use.

          Overall review:

Excellent product for leading on long/short trad and aid routes

Comments about Rock Exotica Silent Partner:

I use the silent partner to rope-solo about once or twice a week. The device itself is very beefy, except for that the finish, particularly along the edges, scratches and chips easily. Watch out for sharp chips in the finish and file them down.

To use this device, you need practice and experience roped soloing. I recommend that you set it up on toprope first, before leading with it. Tie in to some backup knots, THEN TAKE WHIPPERS ON IT. You need to get a feel for how it locks and feeds, how to unlock it, etc.

          Service and delivery comments:

Got it fast, well packaged, as expected.

Comments about Rock Exotica Silent Partner:

          - really feel safe with such gear
          - a bit bulky but we forget quickly after a while
          - need some practice for rope management
          - must have the proper rope (not too small diameter) => after a fall it took me 2 minutes to unlock the rope but the gear was unlocked properly in a second.

Comments about Rock Exotica Silent Partner:

This works really well. If your rope is fuzzy or dirty, it will not feed well. Plan on having a new tight weaved rope, 9.8 seems like it might feed the best. You must have some savvy and be creative in setting up your anchors. I really like this unit, but if you are not comfortable on lead then this product will scare the heck out of you. If you yell "take" to your silent partner, nothing will happen.

Comments about Rock Exotica Silent Partner:

The Silent Partner opens up a whole new world of possibilities for climbing!! Due to time constraints, I started climbing with the SP. Scheduling with partners and such was too big a hassle. With the SP and can climb on my own terms, and log a lot more mileage. The MAJOR disclaimer is that these units require a lot of rigging, technical understanding, and experience. Don't buy it if you're not going to take the time to learn how to use it, [...]

Comments about Rock Exotica Silent Partner:

Silent Partner is a device that finally gives me the freedom to climb when I feel like it. It also boosts the thrill of the climb for me. I can climb 5.4/5.5 and it feels like I'm climbing 5.6/5.7 due to the added skill necessary to climb solo. The device is designed so well that I can climb with confidence. Something I didn't always have with every human partner.

Comments about Rock Exotica Silent Partner:

Wish it locked at slower fall speeds, since most falls are not the rapid type acceleration required for the sp to lock. Maybe I need to use it more. I am very familiar with the soloaid and soloist and love them.
