Comments about Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Avalanche Transceiver:

Great Beacon! I put popular as a pro because lots of people use this beacon which I think is a plus when heading out in the backcountry. Its nice to know everyone has the same good gear. I used to use the old version of this beacon with the old strap that always got twisted and was confusing to put on. The new one has a new strap system that works great! I dig it. It's also a super tough beacon. I've used a couple others that looked like large flip phones and they felt flimsy compared to this one. Being durable is important and this beacon definitely is!

This beacon is very good at single searches. Multiples can get complicated if the victims are close together.

Comments about Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Avalanche Transceiver:

I've owned this beacon for a few years & have liked how easy it is to use. This one I bought as a present for my daughter who is currently during volunteer SAR work in the Vail Valley area. SAR has been such a great experience for her during the summer, I wanted her to be able to continue during the winter months. This will enable her to participate & to be safe.

While I have not used this in an emergency situation I am confident in the simplicity and tested use. It is also the least expensive (not cheap) transceiver. My wife and I have taken them on many trips now and enjoy the relative comfort of the harness. In practice we are able to quickly find it buried and we are only mildly trained (books and one free class).

When it comes to avalanche transceivers, the value of simplicity and reliability cannot be overstated. If you ever need to use this thing in a real situation, the last thing you want is to have to review how to use it. This is why I love this beacon. BCA has made it as simple as possible without sacrificing any functional attributes. The popularity of this beacon is warranted, and these are just a few of the reasons.

I'm just getting into backcountry skiing and got this transceiver based on recommendations from guides and reviews. It's easy to use, fairly compact and one of the best deals out there. Hopefully I just wear it and never truly use it except in practice buries.
